Three recent issues prompt this piece: the assassination of Paula Deen’s character because of a statement taken out of context some twenty-seven years ago, and a visit with someone suffering from a broken relationship, and my dying brother’s inability to say, “I’m sorry” to the sons he hasn’t seen in over thirty years.
Forgiveness is a big word, but it’s center is GIVE. In our society, we are trained to TAKE, whatever we can, at anyone else’s expense. We are…..
I’m an inveterate insomniac. I often wake up in the middle of the night, around three A.M. for no apparent reason, and because I’ve had just enough sleep, I have real difficulty returning to a deep, restful sleep. So, I go through a kind of ritual, allowing myself half and hour or so for thinking, praying, and trying to get back to sleep. When that fails, I get up and read or write.
Usually this happens one or two nights…..
Ev and I have begun a new class at church, and it confirms what I’ve thought a long time: church leaders need special care as they minister to others so that they can share their Christ walk with others as Gospel Coaches. We need to be reminded as leaders that we need the reinforcement of others, the assurances that when things are going well, there is mutual encouragement, and when things need improvement, a Christian brother or sister is available…..
It occurs to me that among all the nastiness in the news, the daily sightings of corruption and evil, the disasters which plague our world, the disease which reminds us of all-too-present mortality, that God blesses us daily with beauty enough to compensate. Beauty generates happiness, and although it is as fleeting as an image in a mirror or a dream which fades with morning’s light, that beauty is a God-designed balm for our souls.
The problem is that we…..
I’ve been wondering why the Bible suggests so often that we rest. I thought the American work ethic wants us to be productive every living minute, to be accomplishing things: shopping, running, exercising, cleaning, redecorating, planning, interacting, serving, and all the other “-ings” we are advised to be doing every livelong minute.
Then Jeremiah asserts this message: “This is what the Lord says: ‘Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is,…..
I don’t know what I would do without Christian fellowship. On three separate occasions this week, I have been blessed to be in special situations with groups of loved Christians, and in a small way, as a mortal, I’ve experienced what heaven must be like.
Sunday worship is always a joy because fellow Christians join in worship, praise, and study of the Word. Tuesday mornings I meet with members of a longstanding women’s fellowship called the Magnolias, where we share…..
Do you remember Thornton Wilder’s insightful play, Our Town? In it Emily returns from heaven to earth for just one more day. She chooses an ordinary day, by anyone else’s standards.
I had one of those days on Saturday. It was, by anyone else’s standards, and even mine, an ordinary day. But it was full of Godincidences, and the joy of doing, going, enjoying, and I’m grateful for it.
I’m reminded that in Larry’s words, any day we’re seeing daisies…..
Tuesdays I meet for early breakfast with a lovely group of women fondly called The Magnolias. When I returned home, my little driveway garden arrested my attention on an Easter lily with five open blossoms and one getting ready to open. Such pure beauty. I planted this lily three years ago, so hoping it would survive, and survive it did, beautifully.
Isn’t it wonderful that past hopes become present realities? Two years ago this week we were eagerly awaiting the…..
