Today’s Daily Vitamin is a challenge. My friend, Leon, always says: “I just thank God for another day!” He gets it. He appreciates every moment. He has a unique perspective, stage four cancer, but he inspires me and I am found wanting in this. My other friend, Larry says, “I can see the daisies rather than feed them from under the ground.” Ha. I am so often found with those who do not appreciate something until it’s gone: my health, success, the business of raising a family, etc. I must look more often at appreciating every moment as if it could be my last.
Yesterday someone sent me a calculator to figure out how long I could live, statistically. Now I know God numbers our days, but this puts it somewhat into perspective. It’s based on actuarial tables, predicting how one’s lifestyle choices influence longevity. Mine predicts 90. That’s long enough for me. It means I may see Kaley grow up–that would be a blessing. It means my kids will be in their early 50’s influencing the world for good.
But then I got to thinking, after reading Garrison Keillor’s quote this morning on my Guidepost Daily Reflection and Prayer site, that I may not be totally appreciating what it means to live life fully. The quote says: “Thank you, God, for this good life and forgive us if we do not love it enough.” There’s new incentive to follow the catechism’s directive: What is our purpose: “Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever.” (Westminster Confession).
That, then becomes my aim for each day.
