Watching the Super Bowl is just a tradition, right? We are curious beings, vicariously seeking thrills of accomplishment, with all the attendant adulation, public worship, glitz, glamour, and pursuit of what’s next. Excitement, even if it belongs to others in the reality of the situation, makes our hearts beat a bit louder. We even cheer at an unexpected long run or exceptional catch of flying leather against all odds.
I’m reminded of how we used to “hover watch” our kids at play, or for me, watching them play in Youth Symphony, taking in each nuance, each face crunch when something wasn’t quite right, and the magnificent smiles on faces as audiences applauded and they stood, proud of their efforts and knowing they had found something worth accomplishing.
I wonder how God is looking at us today, urging us to reach out to others in His name, to tell others how wonderful worship was yesterday morning when we all gathered and sang to the (sorry, here) raucous music that made my ears ring. Did He see our hearts? Did He grasp the pain as we talked of our dear friends in the hospital? Did he listen to the pleas for our attention to the Missions Week efforts being planned. Indeed He did.
Today’s Daily Vitamin, a passage from my book, says it all. He is intimately aware of our every thought and deed today, and applauds when we achieve and grieves when we fail. The difference is, He loves us anyway, with an unconditional love that brings us peace and excitement at the same time. And it’s not staged like a Super Bowl or a concert. It’s constant, and so very welcome as we journey through our days.
