I read through the book of Ezekiel yesterday on my journey through the Bible this year. I was struck by the message over and over again, in my vernacular, God will not be mocked.
It is a difficult book of prophecy, but the same story as repeated in Judges, in the stories about the kings, and indeed in the Genesis story of The Fall. Man is corrupt, and there is no good in us when compared to the God Who created us. We are indeed depraved and undeserving of any measure of mercy He extends toward us.
That being said, I attest here that our righteousness is afforded through Christ’s sacrifice, and His Church will prevail.
Ezekiel, the prophet, gave dire warnings to the cities and peoples of his time. They had abandoned their worship and were doing evil in His sight.
It’s a jump, but I see modern America in the same light as Ezekiel saw the people of his day. And one indication of this occurred as I watched Donald Trump receive a prayer shawl and copies of the Bible for himself and his wife yesterday. He was reaching out to a church in Detroit, trying to explain to them how he could serve them as President. Just as the pastor was about to anoint him, the news feed went dead.
Forget that coverage of the event was overshadowed by repetitive scenes of a small group of protesters, ostensibly, it is reported by some, to be paid to be there. Forget that the biased media saw this as a “media circus” and saw evil intent in Mr. Trump’s visit. Nonetheless, it was a church service, there was prayer and worship, and the pastor was God honoring.
I believe in freedom of speech. It is one of our most cherished Constitutional privileges. I do not approve of the press’s power, or the networks’ power to decide what is “too religious” for us to have the privilege to see. I am appalled by the bias and the dictator-like decisions being exhibited on a daily basis. This was outright wrong.
Regardless of political leanings, and noting that both candidates presented to us are flawed, let us be praying over this election with fervor and in the fear of the Lord. Ezekiel could just as well be speaking to our corrupt and God-ignoring society as he was to the ancient Hebrew nation and the countries of his time. Nothing much as changed. We are still in need of a Savior, Whom God, in His mercy, has provided.
Woe to the nation, even ours, who mocks Him. For our doom is sure. It is time for the church to preach revival, to accuse us of our sin, to show the path to redemption, and to lead Christians to proclamation that God is in charge, and even though persecution and injustice are trying to mute her message, that God is indeed sovereign.
