As part of the world, in its fallen state, we justifiably feel anxious from time to time. Whether it is facing an impending weather event like a Florida hurricane, or a medical procedure or diagnosis, or financial woes, we could just wring our hands, ask, “Why? God?” or complain about our lot in life. Most people would understand those responses as normal.
However, for the believer, sanctified in the faith, mature in the knowledge and experience of God’s sovereignty, we have a very different recourse. God has promised that whatever the circumstances, we are under His protective eye, and He will use circumstances to His glory.
Perhaps few of us, hopefully, will face a giant like Goliath, or the awaiting lion’s den, or a martyr’s fate. But if we are called to do so, may we have the grace to trust God and be ready. More likely, our difficulties may be cultural.
When we are asked to speak up for Jesus, can we be bold? When we are to speak wise words of counsel, will we recall the scripture applicable to the situation? Or when we are in a court of law, will we have the presence of mind to recall one of my favorite scriptures:
Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is good? But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame. For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God’s will, than for doing evil[1].
Finally, in Romans, Paul reminds us that because we are heirs, we have nothing to fear, because God is with us. When and if suffering comes, may it be to God’s glory.
