My personal Bible study this year is creating “Reading Excitement!” I’m using the One Year Chronological Bible, New Living Translation from Tyndale, and reliving the Old Testament stories of heroes and happenings. The theme is always the same: God’s sovereignty and providence, His rules to live by, man’s sinful choices, retribution, restoration, and redemption. I know the history and stories point to the need for a Savior, and just since Easter I have seen glimpses of that plan and the total relevance of these stories to today’s events as well.
I invite you to take this week’s journey with me. April 5th: Judges 16 Samson, April 6th Judges 17-19 Micah’s story and the almost complete annihilation of the tribe of Benjamin. April 7th: The treatment of aliens in the book of Ruth. April 8th: The prayers and promises to Hannah in 1 Samuel 1 and 2, and April 8th the answer by God in providing her son, and today, April 10th, the capture and return of the Ark in 1 Samuel 6.
What is the story? God’s power, God’s provision. God’s guidance. God’s judgment. God’s mercy. Man’s willfulness. What are the implications for 21st century America? God has established His laws. God cares for aliens among us. God choses speaks to leaders and chooses nations to bless and nations to fall. God will not tolerate sinning against His laws. God’s will prevails. He raises up leaders. In the coming week God presents a king named Saul, who does evil in the sight of the Lord. Then God appoints David as King. Join me in reading 1 Samuel and see what God says about leaders. Pray for our President and God’s will to prevail, whatever it is, Look to God, the true Ruler of the Universe, follow His laws, and expect His answers to our prayers.
