The book of Proverbs in the Bible exhorts us to seek knowledge and seek wisdom. It seems the writer, some attach Solomon to this advice, values wisdom among the highest assets of man. As a career teacher, I suppose I espoused this as well, seeking to educate a generation or more, to acquire wisdom and base life-choices on its merits.
Then I read Ecclesiastes and discover that all is vanity, even wisdom. So, I suppose the “wisest” advice is that we need to make informed choices and live our lives with the sure knowledge that God is sovereign, that He directs our paths, that He is always seeking our best, and that in the end, the only wise decision is to trust the God of the universe, Who knows us intimately and cares for us better than we can do so. That, indeed, is the beginning of wisdom and leads us ultimately to a relationship with Him through the love He sent to our world, namely Jesus Christ our savior.
So, assuming we are always looking for advice in this mortal life, from where the best sales are to solving problems of any sort, let us begin with the firm foundation, that God is the source of all wisdom, all power, all understanding, and all things “under the sun” as Ecclesiastes puts it, and that we can trust Him when we speak to Him in prayer. That’s the very best advice there is. Prayer conquers all, and is the most powerful communication of wisdom God created.
Here, then, is “My Psalm 307: Seeking Wisdom.” May it bless your day and your days to come.
MY PSALM 307 SEEKING WISDOM
Almighty God, Creator of the Universe, Abba, Father,
I pray today for wisdom, Your guidance, Your direction.
Around me I hear constant babble,
Competing voices,
Rabid arguments,
Statements of fools parading as truth.
I need only hear Your still, small voice
As I come to You in prayer.
Proverbs chapter 18 describes the world we live in:
Whoever isolates himself seeks his own desire;
he breaks out against all sound judgment.
A fool takes no pleasure in understanding,
but only in expressing his opinion.
When wickedness comes, contempt comes also,
and with dishonor comes disgrace.
The words of a man’s mouth are deep waters;
the fountain of wisdom is a bubbling brook.
It is not good to be partial to the wicked
or to deprive the righteous of justice.
A fool’s lips walk into a fight,
and his mouth invites a beating.
A fool’s mouth is his ruin,
and his lips are a snare to his soul.
I seek this day to listen to Your advice, Lord.
Give me the insight to bring words
Of peace,
Of love
Of affirmation,
Of encouragement,
Of purity, to every conversation.
With James Chapter 1 I affirm:
Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. Therefore, put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
And
If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless. Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.
So, Lord, I ask this day that You will blot out
The babble the world says is truth,
And let me bask in Your wisdom,
Seeking You first
In my thoughts,
My actions,
My decisions,
My conversations,
My writing,
And my relationships.
May I be an ambassador for Christ in all things.
In the Name of Jesus, whom I follow. Amen.
