Did you know that the Bible icon on your phone gives you a verse for the day? Today’s is from Proverbs 19. This chapter is loaded with good advice. Here are two pieces to ponder today: “Many are the plans in the mind of man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.” This is what we pray when we ask to follow the Lord’s will and not our own. It also tells us to keep our plans in our prayers as we ask God to bless our efforts. Sometimes He will advise against what we’re thinking because it is not what is best for us. He knows the future; we do not.
Another verse from this chapter says: “The fear of the Lord leads to life, and whoever has it rests satisfied. He will not be visited by harm.” Both advise us to seek the Lord’s blessing whenever we are making plans, or even when, as is my case, I am retired, and often do not have specific plans for the day. How should I use my time? For the last ten years, I have spent my days writing books. I am now thinking I may move on from that pursuit.
I am in a waiting stage while I recover from hip surgery, wondering what my next endeavor will be. I am seeking God’s answer to a family issue I’m trying to solve. I am seeking God’s direction in caring for my sister who lives alone in the north and is facing yet another winter. Should I intervene in her living arrangement? With that come many concerns: her array of doctors, her established friendships, her animals, her attachment to “things,” and her desire for independence even though it may no longer be a safe option. So, what are God’s plans for this situation? Today’s verse urges me to sincerely pray about options.
A verse for the day is a valuable tool as long as we are looking at scripture as a whole. Today’s two verses from Proverbs 19 leave me much to ponder.
God bless your day.
