Today we celebrate and remember the sacrifices made on D Day eighty years ago today. I ask today, what is the price of freedom? Are the battles we still face, of open warfare, of addiction, or poverty, of prejudice, of crime, of deprivation, of famine, of domestic violence, of oppression, of Communism, of Marxism, of evil in all its forms–worth fighting against and conquering?
Sin in all its form is evil. Whenever a person or an idea or philosophy, or selfish ideology seeks to oppress others, the original Garden of Eden reoccurs. Wanting to be in charge of one’s own destiny denies the presence of a supreme being and turns attention to selfish gain. Original sin is a self-centered aggrandizement at the expense of others–whether by an individual, a rule, or a movement. No matter what euphemisms are applied, it is still sin.
Those who reject the religious definition fill their lives with seeking other “happiness” or “fulfillment” or “satisfaction” or self-seeking idol worship. There is, indeed, a God-sized hole in each individual ever born. It is that longing for answers until one’s hopes are satisfied. Those who know and worship Jesus have found what some call the “opiate” of reliance on someone else for one’s soul-satisfaction. Yes, that’s right, for only belief in Jesus can fully satisfy, and He gives the guidance and direction and the reason for living that many seek.
