My first book, It’s a God Thing! has a beautiful wedding scene between Deirdre and John. Here are the vows they repeat at their ceremony, and on this Valentine’s Day, we could learn from them:
“JOHN: Deirdre, I promise as your husband to be the spiritual, financial, and affective leader in our home. With God’s grace, we will establish a Christ-centered home, a model of His teaching. I will earnestly seek God’s will through prayer, and follow His principles and governance in our home. I promise to pray with you daily, to pray for you constantly, and to continuously bathe our relationship and our home with loving prayer. I will prioritize my time so that you always feel valued, my true life’s partner, and that I will never cease loving you with thought, word, deed, attitude, emotional, intellectual, and financial whole being, living as a sacrificial offering. I will, with you, lead our children to Christ, will maintain spiritual purity through reading God’s word, obediently following its principles, and let the Holy Spirit fill me to produce attitudes and character reflective of Jesus Christ’s presence in my life. I am committed to your spiritual, physical, emotional, and financial welfare until together we worship at Jesus’ feet in the perfection of His heavenly kingdom, God helping me.”
DEIRDRE: John, I pledge myself to you only, as your workmate and companion, as directed by God’s ordinance in Genesis. I will honor God by submitting to your leadership in our home. I commit and submit to your authority as my husband and head of our home, and will teach our children that you are our spiritual guide, just as Christ taught that the wife in the home is as the Bride of Christ. I will bring harmony, security, and unity to our home, will make it a place of refreshment and beauty to renew your strength and well-being, so that together we may serve the Lord in our ministry. I will continuously bless the Lord and you with a grateful spirit, a gracious attitude, and loving sacrifice for the benefit of our relationship, our children, and our work together in ministry, and as a blessing to our Heavenly Father who loves us with a perfect love. With you, I will discipline our children in the fear and admonition of the Lord, and will assure them of God’s eternal love and guidance for their lives. I will study God’s word and apply His principles to our life’s walk. I will pray with you daily, I will pray for your personally, spiritually , and in our work, I will sacrificially share you with the needs of the congregations we will serve together, and I will exhibit a gentleness of spirit which encourages you daily, God helping me.”
We can make the world a better place through our marriages. I wish you love in yours.
