As Lent ends, Christians once again concentrate on the sacrifice of Christ for us. What a miraculous blessing. Just as Jesus humbled Himself to leave the heavenly realm to become a man, so he lived his life humbly among us. He never owned a home, raised a family, filled out a job application, or established a 401K retirement account. He focused His entire life serving His Father here among men.
He faced rejection, betrayal, scoffing, beating, scorn, and crucifixion. He did not sin. He did not display depression. He did not ask, “Why Me?”
We who know Him appreciate His sacrifice and worship Him for our salvation. We are totally humbled by the thought that anyone would want to change our condition, but amazed that God loves us so much, that He gave His only Son to accomplish this deed. From the beginning of the world, it was the plan of the Almighty to reach to us, to love us, to redeem us, to fellowship with us, to welcome us to His Eternal Realm.
What then is our response?
“Thy life was given for me; Thy blood, O Lord, was shed, That I might ransomed be, and quickened from the dead: Thy life was given for me; What have I given for Thee?
Long years were spent for me in weariness and woe, That through eternity Thy glory I might know; Long years were spent for me; Have I spent one for Thee?
And Thou has brought to me, Down from Thy home above, Salvation full and free, Thy pardon and Thy love; Great gifts Thou broughtest me; What have I brought to Thee?
O let my life be given, My years for Thee be spent, World fetters all be riven, and Joy with suffering blent! Thou gavest Thyself for me; I give myself to Thee.”
