I’m busy writing my third book, a friendship garden memoir. It’s an idea I’ve had bubbling in my head for some time, and the time is right to write it. You all know I love my garden, mostly because I can share my flowers with others and provide for the critters that often visit our yard.
Because we’ve moved eight times, I cherish memories of the trees, flowers, landscapes and water features I’ve nurtured through the years. Likewise, my family and friends have nurtured me, wherever and whenever they’ve influenced me in these three score and ten plus years.
The last literature I taught last year was the drama Diary of Anne Frank by Goodrich and Hackett. In it, Anne in her imagination says that she rather likes the idea that in her mind, flowers from all seasons can bloom at the same time–there’s no summer, fall, or spring, but daffodils and chrysanthemums can appear side by side.
So it is with my memory garden. I’m enjoying thinking about the kaleidoscopic vision of a world like I picture paradise to be, with every variety in utmost profusion blooming in endless beauty, and with those views, every wonderful Christian who has been part of my life will be partying around the throne of Jesus, singing the most beautiful harmonies together in eternal splendor. Now how’s that for a friendship garden idea?
Meanwhile, the very real work of writing, weeding, and teaching will fill this mortal day, and perhaps I’ll think of some other vignettes to add to my new book.
