Writing the “Think about it” section of my latest devotional guide. If your life seems fraught with confusion, may this be a blessing to you today: There is much confusion in the Bible, since God’s ways are not our ways. His ways are higher than our ways. He can see into the future; we cannot. He created order; we create chaos. He knows the ramifications of sin; we in our pride think we’re immune, somehow. Oh, that we truly understood the holiness of God.
The Scriptures warn us to always be wary. We are to watch out for the animals: the lion walking among us, looking for those he can destroy. The wolf in sheep’s clothing. The fact that we wander like lost sheep without a shepherd when left to our own devices.
In our defense, we discover that even the disciples who had the benefit of His daily teachings and observed the Lord’s actions first hand, still were confused, and some even asked, “Could this be the Messiah?”
We have one effective defense. The Holy Spirit comforts, guides, and directs. We have a second. Jesus intercedes for us. Therefore, while we may not have all the answers, God invites, no, rather directs us to seek answers directly from Him in prayer. Therefore, although we may see in the mirror only dimly, we can know far more than trusting in our own minds’ meanderings alone. That, in fact, is the furthest thing from God’s purpose for us.
We need to sit under God’s preaching of the word from those who walk closely with Him. We need to study. We need to live in Christian community, where we can sharpen each other as iron sharpens iron, and where we can express our confusion authentically, without fear of reprisal, in complete confidence, until we better understand God’s will.
Alas, we will not have all the answers this side of heaven, for we can only see the image dimly. But oh, the glory that awaits us in the eternal life planned for us. There should be no confusion at all about that. The Scriptures are clear.
