“In the original Greek text, the word ‘Christ’ was written XRISTOS. The letters CHI (X) and RHO (R or P) were combined into one of the earliest known Christian symbols. It has been found inscribed on the walls of Roman catacombs dating back to the 2nd century. In Hebrew, the word “Christ” is translated ‘Messiah’, which means ‘the anointed one’”
PRAYER:
Heavenly Father,
We think about the early Christians who identified themselves by using this symbol. We think of the early church members who were literally hiding from the Roman authorities who wished them harm.
We thank You that they indeed recognized the Messiah and were eager to proclaim Him as Savior.
We are sorry they had to meet in the place of the dead. It must have been unpleasant for them. But they were persistent and found it to be a safe place. Thank You for preserving them and their love for You. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
