“Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Psalm 90:12 has great relevance as one day passes into the next, as one year passes. So, in the few verses before it, I have learned a part of that wisdom. “The length of our days is seventy years–or eighty, if we have the strength; yet their span is but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away.” Yes, life is sometimes harsh, but being loved by a sovereign God who loves us, teaches us, transforms us, redeems us, and ultimately chooses us to spend eternity with Him, is gracious living at its best.
In this year, I can honestly say with the Psalmist that God has been faithful. The Psalm ends this way: “Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days. Make us glad for as many days as you have afflictied us, for as many years as we have seen trouble. May your deeds be shown to your servants, your splendor to their children. May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us; establish the work of our hands for us–yes, establish the work of our hands.”
During 2013, the Lord has blessed me with strength to accomplish what He wished me to accomplish. I have published and begun to market three books; I have provided for my family and friends in whatever ministry I could; I have used music as a blessing to others and hopefully to our Lord; I have taught students and enjoyed seeing their progress; I cared for my brother in his dying days; I have loved my children and my grandchildren well; I have grown closer to my Lord through study and worship; I have been glad for more than the days of affliction. I am truly blessed beyond comprehension knowing that I am loved by others, but most of all by my Lord who strengthens and guides my every moment. I pray that in the New Year I will continue to grow in His wisdom and rely more on His strength than my own. Happy New Year.
