Just finished reading Billy Graham’s book titled Nearing Home where he discussus retirement, much as I did in my Job Loss: What’s Next? A Step by Step Action Plan book. He too feels the sting of aging out of many of the activities he’d spent his life on, which gave purpose and meaning. Retirement is like that.
I’m thrilled that he took the effort, profound effort, to write yet another book filled with his wisdom. Liberally sprinkled with, or should I say based upon, scriipture, he senses that God will call him home when it’s time, when His purpose is fulfilled. Until that time, he will remain productive in prayer.
I can identify with this. I am filling my days with too much activity, while I still am able, but know eventually my hours will be spent on what to others see as passive activity. I just pray I will have the faculties needed to think and express thought.
And yet, we long for heaven, don’t we? Especially when we see our physical health diminishing, our borders closing in, and our activities of little consequence to others where once we were the movers and shakers. It really is sort of beginning of life, like little Emily’s world, where physical needs are ministered to, where one room is home, and where others visit once in a while between naps and “please sleep all night.”
Let us hope our mission while hale and hearty was fulfilled, where our legacy of passing on the faith, the wisdom, the life-story was effective, and that we lived successfully doing the tasks with willing attitudes and strength that God set before us. I do not want to live with regret.
Blessings on this man of faith who has so blessed thousands of others. May we meet as fellow servants in heaven and hear the words of our Lord, “Well done, good and faithful servants. Enter into eternal rest.”
