It’s the Lord’s Day. When you worship today, get ready for praise, prayer, listening, and heeding so that we can face the week ahead.
Psalm 59:16-17 is a good place to start getting ready! “I will sing of Your strength, in the morning I will sing of Your love, for You are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble. You are my strength. I sing praise to You; You, God, are my fortress, my God on whom I can rely.”
And to continue the battle image, Ephesians 6:16-17. We get ready for what is ahead by “suiting up,” physically and spiritually, to prepare us for what’s ahead. We must not be spiritual “couch potatoes” thinking about relaxing, vacationing (as if anyone can afford to do that), or thinking about ourselves. There’s a world out there we must defend and guide to Glory. How do we do that?
“Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Sprit, which is the World of God. Pray at all times and on every occasion in the power of the Holy Spirit. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayer for all Christians everywhere.”
So, that being said, are we ready for the day? Are we ready for such a time as this? Are we prepared in our hearts and souls? Are we strong and ready for battle? Are we gobbling up scriptures for our souls’ sake? Are we really feeding on the truth, or is the world’s culture more important to us that God’s truth? Is our salvation and that of our households secure and strong like a helmet that protects the head? Are we bathing our problems and concerns in prayer, or are we surface Christians, thinking God is sovereign and He’ll take care of everything while we sit around and complain and grumble? Are we staying alert? Are we persistent in prayer? Do we lift up our pastors, children’s teachers, missionaries, worship leaders, musicians, and pastors’ wives, elders, deacons, and tech crews in prayer? Are we praying for our political leaders in this stressful time? Are we praying against injustice? Are we praying for the peace of Jerusalem? Are we accomplishing, complaining, feeding our self-righteousness, or are we changing the world? What does our After Action Report look like when we examine the day or the week or the year or the lifetime we’ve spent? What does the accounting look like?
I titled this blog “Get Ready.” Are we?
Pray that revival comes to our nation and the world in such a time as this.
A career teacher, with forty years of teaching language arts/English, Betty Jackson enjoys wordsmithing, writing, and reading as a vocation and avocation.Retirement is her "age of frosting," a chance to pursue postponed hobbies with gusto. She especially sends kudos to the Space Coast Writers Guild members for their encouragement and advice. Her five books, It's a God Thing!, Job Loss: What's Next? She and her husband soon celebrate their 47th anniversary, and have lived in New York, New Jersey, Iowa, and now the paradise of Palm Bay, Florida. Their two grown children and daughter-in-love, all orchestra musicians, and our beautiful granddaughters Kaley and Emily live nearby. Hobbies, and probably future topics on her blog: gardening, symphonic music (especially supporting the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra as a volunteer and proud parent of a violinist, a cellist, and an oboist), singing, book clubs, and co-teaching a weekly small-group Bible study for seniors. She volunteers and substitute teaches at Covenant Christian School, and serves as a board member of the Best Yet Set senior group at church. Foundationally, she daily enjoys God's divine appointments called Godincidences, which show God's providence and loving kindness.
