We have spent a year and a half afraid to meet together because of COVID’s curse and political leaders who couldn’t let a crisis go to waste. It is time to gather, to hug, to converse, to share our woes and joys, to worship, to communicate with smiles, raised eyebrows, and embraces.
I so look forward to Wednesdays. It is when our small group gathers. Some of our members have always been at a distance: Dan in Texas, Marion in Ohio, and two without cameras on their computers. We’ve thankfully Zoomed, so grateful for the technology. But soon we shall gather, most of us, around the table, and see the smiles and the tears and feel come connected.
Isolation is not the way to share the Gospel message either. The hymn says it so well: “Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love,/ the FELLOWSHIP of kindred minds /is like to that above. Before our Father’s throne /We pour our ardent prayers; Our fears, our hopes, our aims are one, Our comfort and our cares. /We share our mutual woes, /Our mutual burdens bear,/ And often for each other flows/ the sympathizing tear/. From sorrow, toil and pain,/ and sin we shall be free/, and perfect love and friendship reign /Through all eternity.”(John Fawcett)
If you are not part of an accountability group through your church, start one. I guarantee you will look forward to times when you can be together. It’s a microcosm of the church gathered to worship on Sunday as a family, but small groups are significant ways to encourage our walk with the Lord by walking together as brothers and sisters.
