Convergence of ideas can keep one awake at night. Such was the case for me last night. I am devouring Erwin W. Lutzer’s book, “We Will Not Be Silenced.” Missions Week is beginning at Covenant Church this week. Congress is debating a bill which I consider an existential threat to our democratic way of life as it seeks even more debilitating mandates than vaccines as Congress intends to pass a cradle to grave big government takeover of our hard-won freedoms. In my throughout the night prayers, God reminded me of an old hymn which brings all these things together, so I can optimistically look at today remembering God is sovereign and He wins the battle of good over evil.
So as we debate Critical Race Theory, Marxism, open borders, tax reform (this bill is paid for?), more IRS agents to see if we’ve spent or earned $600., free college for all, including the million + refugees we are importing (many through illegal entry), the erosion of free speech, freedom to petition our government in peaceful protest, invasion of our homes and bodies, eldercare which decides who lives and for how long, and community organizing whose purpose is to exert conflict and assert power, we watch out history turned into a weapon of anger, our patriotism mocked, our current events turned into lies and buck-passing, and our nation lose her reputation as a bastion of freedom. Victory is acclaimed where disaster occurred. The minority of loudest shouters wields power and influence, and our representative government falls prey to party allegiance rather than thoughtful determination and debate.
I am in a minority, for the press, the arts, culture, and influencers have little use for my reliance upon God who is sovereign. Mock me if you will. Has the church always been right? No. It is made up of sinners. It is not a place for saints, but the home of sinners who acknowledge that secular humanism will never win the ultimate battle.
I believe in miracles. I know good will win over evil. I recognize that man is self-centered and seeks his power and influence. Those who are seeking “equality” and preach their doctrine of “big brother government knows best” live in mansions in gated communities. Their power corrupts; their secret corporations and sheltered bank accounts are hidden from the masses who idolize them as leaders. But God knows their hearts because He created male and female, and He made them equal. Christianity gave women a voice, the slave freedom, and made the humble rich, and gives work and duty worth.
This hymn, “God is Working His Purpose Out” is my source of wisdom today. Arthur Campbell Ainger wrote this hymn in 1894.
1 God is working this purpose out,
as year succeeds to year;
God is working this purpose out,
and the time is drawing near;
nearer and nearer draws the time,
the time that shall surely be:
when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God
as the waters cover the sea.
2 From utmost east to utmost west,
where human feet have trod,
by the mouth of many messengers
goes forth the voice of God:
“Give ear to me, ye continents,
ye isles, give ear to me,
that the earth may be filled with the glory of God
as the waters cover the sea.”
3 Let us go forth in the strength of God,
with the banner of Christ unfurled,
that the light of the glorious gospel of truth
may shine throughout the world.
Let us all fight with sorrow and sin
to set the captives free,
that the earth may be filled with the glory of God
as the waters cover the sea.
4 All we can do is nothing worth
unless God blesses the deed.
Vainly we hope for the harvest-tide
till God gives life to the seed.
Yet nearer and nearer draws the time,
the time that shall surely be,
when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God
as the waters cover the sea.
