We are living in a time of unrest in our country. That, of course, is nothing new. That is what mortal life is. However, I, for one, am hearted to read in Revelation, that Satan’s power is somewhat bound and limited. Else, we could not survive His onslaught. Without the superior power of our sovereign God, we would be utterly without hope.
The Apostle Paul wrote an epistle to the Ephesians who were living in the time of Roman dominance and the persecution of Christians. He wrote these encouraging words to that church. He tried to ask them this question: Can we ever fully appreciate the magnitude of God’s power? Those of us in The Way need to dwell on this truth for such a time as this: “I pray that you will begin to understand the incredible greatness of His power for us who believe Him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated Him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms.” (Ephesians 1:19-20)
I return to scripture and to the hymns of the church for encouragement. Not only is the church under attack, and our people seem to live as cultural, rather than committed, Christians, we are losing the very fabric of our country’s uniqueness which was based, from the very beginning, on Judeo-Christian principles. Our founders wrote our guiding documents based on the truth of the Ten Commandments, the power and influence of God, the Sovereignty of God above kings and powers, and dedicated our nation to the principle that freedom would reign so that people could reach their potential.
In the past few years we have seen God’s principles thwarted, have put self-interest before the public good, and have defied God’s principles and truths. We are reaping only the beginnings of governmental tyranny he rule of law has been sullied by special interests, and the choices made by many in power openly flaunt God’s laws to our country’s detriment. We have, as a result, instability, threats from dictatorial regimes, vulnerability, chaos in our streets, and the beginnings of famine, destruction of our cities, and oppression.
We should not be surprised at this. Our nation has lost its way, defied God’s immutable laws, and as predicted in scripture, we are living in the last days. The book of Daniel predicts things such as AI which may be the next satanic influence: “But you, Daniel, “shut up the words, and seal the book until the time of the end; many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase.” (Daniel 12:4) Next, “In the last days scoffers will come with their mocking, following their own lusts.(I Peter) Eeven the elect of Christ will be deceived: “For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect.” (Matthew 24:24) and in-the-end-times, “People will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred.“(2 Timothy 3:2), and Romans 1:26 says even our sexual relations will change.
Before our very eyes, we are seeing erosion of our country’s heritage. Statues and art are being destroyed, businesses are being ransacked, squatters are taking over homes from their legal owners, riots occur in our streets, and we cannot believe what our leaders are saying as truth. Sin against God is nothing new, and God’s retribution is nothing new either. As predicted in scripture: “
1 God of grace and God of glory,
on your people pour your pow’r;
crown your ancient Church’s story,
bring its bud to glorious flow’r.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage
for the facing of this hour,
for the facing of this hour.
2 Lo, the hosts of evil round us
scorn the Christ, assail his ways.
From the fears that long have bound us
free our hearts to faith and praise.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage
for the living of these days,
for the living of these days.
3 Cure your children’s warring madness;
bend our pride to your control;
shame our wanton, selfish gladness,
rich in things and poor in soul.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage
lest we miss your kingdom’s goal,
lest we miss your kingdom’s goal.
4.Set our feet on lofty places;
Gird our lives that they may be
Armored with all Christlike graces
In the fight to set men free.
Grand us wisdom, grant us courage
Lest we miss thy Kingdom’s goal.
Lest we miss thy Kingdom’s goal.
5 Save us from weak resignation
to the evils we deplore;
let the gift of your salvation
be our glory evermore.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage
serving you whom we adore,
serving you whom we adore.
