It used to be, May Day was a time of flowers, May Pole Dances, and welcoming spring. The tradition was, romantically, that a young man would hang flowers, usually in a little basket, on the door of his beloved as a sign of love. It was supposed to be from “a secret admirer,” and he tried to run away before she discovered the gift.
Now, it’s a long-gone tradition, but when the children were young, we would pick flowers from our garden, take our wagon, and place little bouquets on neighbors’ doors.
In college, we had a maypole dance, all the girls dressed in white, weaving ribbons around a pole to welcome spring.
Then, the Communists took over and held, and probably will today, parades of their military hardware to show the strength and prowess.
It’s hard to say what today’s will be, but I’m hanging a sweet message on doors here at my senior living community. Surely someone will remember what May Day used to mean.
Here are some cards you might like to copy and give to friends you meet today.
