The theme for today is “Hovering.” Precipitated by the Chinese baloon that is surveilling us from 60,000 feet and causing us much discussion, I’m thinking about the ramifications of knowing that another superpower is hovering over us, uninvited, trying to see what we’re up to.
Then, I watched a doting grandfather at the cafe where we had breakfast. He was anything but “uninvited” watching every move of his darling toddler grandson. He watched with pride as the little fellow put the toys back in the bin where he had found them. The little fellow was his pride and joy, and I’m quite sure that Grandpa would do anything to protect his legacy from any harm or danger.
That’s quite the contrast, isn’t it. Then, of course, as I always do, I think of the spiritual context. Of the first, we as a nation sould be praying against invasion from an adversary who is always looking for opportunities to steal our secrets, plan for our defeat, and mock our way of life. They are flooding our country with enough toxic drug to kill every person. Perhaps Fentanyl ,will make its way into our food or water supply in an act of terrorism. It is suspected that COVID came from China. We know it certainly started there and spread from there. Now, they are dealing with its spread once again in their own country. We know they are spying on our businesses and our government affairs, and seeking to steal our technology and make it their own. Now, we wonder why they are guessing we’ll allow them to spy on our defense establishments, or testing our mettle and winning because we are not defending against this intrusion into our sovereign space. Why would we? We are not protecting our southern border either.
However, we Christians are praying constantly that those in power in China, and also in our country will be brought to their senses, and that in God’s sovereign will might be taught as Pharaoh n Egypt was, that God is almighty and nothing is impossible for Him. Can it be that our leaders, and others around the world will be touched by the Holy Spirit and used for the good of the world rather than its destruction?
We certainly can pray for God’s protection, for we are told in scripture that God knows our every thought, our every motives, and that the Holy Spirit will guard our hearts, give us the right words to speak, and keep our souls from destruction because of the saving grace of Jesus, Lord and Savior. What have we to fear? the Scriptures tell us. God is indeed with us, and as a nation, our founders led us to believer “In God We Trust.” While only a remnant of us take that seriously, it seems, we can be the force that reminds others that He is, indeed, in control of every circumstance, and while things in this moral and temporary life look threatening, our home is with Him in eternity. So, again, with Jeremiah, we pray today: “Ah, Sovereign Lord, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for You.” (Jeremiah 32:17. Therefore, we pray you will thwart the plans of all who seek to harm us, and give us mercy of peace in our hearts, since You are in charge and Your will and Your purposes will prevail.
Whatever that balloon is doing, I call on Psalm 68:33-34 which reminds us: “Sing to the One who rides across the ancient heavens, His mighty voice thundering from the sky. Tell everyone about God’s power. His majesty shines down on Israel; His strength is mighty in the heavens.” He who put the stars and moon in place can get that balloon out of here with one mighty push and it will be no more.
