Read Psalm 8 with me:
O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth!
You have set Your glory above the heavens.
From the lips of children and infants, you have ordained praise because of Your enemies, to silence the foes and the avenger.
when I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers,
the moon and the stars which You have set in place,
what is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?
You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings, and crowned him with glory and honor.
You made him ruler over the works of Your hands; You put everything under his feet: all flocks and herds,
and the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, all that swim in the paths of the sea.
O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth!”
What a testimony to our place in this world. We are to honor the God of the universe Who gives us life, purpose, gory and honor, worth, and the heart to understand the height, breadth, depth, and expanse of His majesty.
Every day should be a day of worship, for that is our first and only task. The first commandment says, You shall have no other God before me. That means, we are to worship God and then all other pieces of our lives will fall into place.
It is so easy to be discouraged without this first step. Unless we recognize the sovereignty of God, His lordship over the universe and over us, we are left to our own devices, and order becomes chaos, good becomes evil, and we are ships without rudders and people who wander aimlessly through life.
If this latter aspect sounds familiar to you, if it is your descriptor, then I urge you to read the book of John in the Bible, I urge you to wallow in the discouragement of the first chapter of Ecclesiastes, and discover that life without God is aimless, troublesome, and full of unanswerable questions.
I urge you to attend church this weekend, either one you’ve been to before or one you’ve thought about visiting but have procrastinated. There you will find people who will welcome you with the hand of friendship, you will hear and participate in praise and worship to God, and you will find a fellowship of believers who have found the answers to life’s questions. All it takes is the initiative to open the door.
Or, call a friend you know is a Christian, tell him or her you are struggling, and feel God’s presence. The Bible tells us that where two or three are gathered in Jesus’ Name, He will be in their presence. I promise it is a truth you can count on. Don’t procrastinate. Don’t look for excuses. Don’t rely on the mistaken notion that one you were baptized as a child, that you’re a Christian. Unless You know Christ as the purpose of your existance and the center of your little universe, you are missing the hope and strength you need to chase away discouragement and find joy. May grace and peace be with you.
