As if magnet-drawn,
Birds descended
On hanging dishes
Filled with new seed.
Dashing red cardinals
Dressed for spring flings
Led the entourage
With cheeps and wild bacchanals
Flitting here, dashing there
Calling undue attention to their revels.
Their dowdy mates
Were no less vocal
But let their voices
Do their bidding
“Do come join me, dear”
They flirted,
Swinging on the newly leaved
Bastard indigo
Just springing into bloom.
While I, sipping cranberry tea,
Watched their antics
Listening as merry melodies
Wrote symphonies to my
Latest investment in birdseed.
Sometimes it’s just fun to just sit back and observe nature. I find it a most pleasant pasttime. Unfortunately, other things–family, concerts, subbing, trying to market my books–get in the way, but occasionally, it’s just fun to let nature take over and nurture me. This is one of those moments.
The world of nature is never-changing and always a wonder. What amazing things occur just outside the screen-porch door. Lively cardinals fit this description. They announce their breatfast-time in no uncertain terms. I would think, if they were concerned at all about the predator hawks which watch them, they would silently, even stealthily, dash in and out of the feeding station, just tending to business and getting on with their days. No. Unlike other visitors to the feeder, the wrens, woodpeckers, catbird and others who flit in and furiously fly away, the cardinals just want to sing, chirp, and linger so all can observe their rituals. I just love their energy, their bold statements and songs, and their audacity. Join me in your imaginary glimpses of them for just a moment, and I’ll bet you’ll smile! I do.
