One of the advantages of this hectic time of preparation to move is going through “stuff” we’ve accumulated and reliving past encounters with people and places. I found my high school yearbooks, and the ones from several of the schools where I served as yearbook advisor. Going back to the 1960’s and after in my teaching career and our kids’ school records has been enlightening. Oh, what yearbook editors could have done with computers!
I’ve found notes from friends, old grocery lists, papers I wrote in grammar school, a note to Santa when I was five, and lots of pictures. The Days of our lives come racing back, and I am thankful for God’s continuous blessings.
We have moved ten time; this will be eleven. Oh, my. I thought we had “downsized” when we moved here, but now, the harsh reality is that we still have too much “stuff.” I suspect some hard decisions are ahead in the next few weeks. We have much to share with Goodwill, with friends, with future pastors, and with ministries. It’s time to let others vegin their journeys with stuff. Perhaps they will remember us fondly. That’s the best of legacies.
Today, count your blessings. Remember that old song Bing Crosby sang? “When I am worried, and I can’t sleep, I count my blessings instead of sheep…and I fall asleep Counting My Blessings…?” Yes. Unfortunately, I cannot access other pictures of those gathered around my table, but you get the point.
