I’m beginning research for a book idea tracing music and its use through scripture. Music plays a big part in my life. From beginning piano at three years old to try to strengthen my crossed eyes ans astigmatism to watching with pride as my children and grandchildren perform in orchestras, music has inspired, comforted, challenged, and amazed me in countless performances, venues, celebrations, and concerts. I have admired musicians from afar and many are friends. I have enjoyed performing in many choirs, choruses, and small groups from grade school to the present. I have directed junior choirs, inspiring children to learn scripture through songs and have been choir director in several churches. I have been a church service accompanist on piano and organ, and have played for solo and ensemble auditions with school kids. Nothing has brought me more joy.
With my eyesight now compromised, I cannot easily read music. It is one of my greatest disappointments., and with my one-side deafness, I am sure I’m missing some of the finest details. I am actively involved in supporting the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra and applauding with loud applause and Bravos. I count many musicians as dear friends.
The Bible reportedly has hundreds of references to religious festivals using music, and singing is mentioned many times in the Psalms and also in practices of the early church. Without church music inspired by the Bible, our cultures of the world would be diminished. Kudos to our Worship pastor at Covenant Church in Palm Bay for his studies and constant involvement in what he calls the Rhythm of Worship. He is an encouragement to worship leaders and musicians through his ministry.
Today’s verse is: Psalm 59:16 which reads: “I will sing of Your strength, in the morning I will sing of Your love; for You are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble. You are my strength. I sing praise to You; You, God, are myu fortress, my God on whom I can rely.”
I know this will be a big process of discovery. My masters degree thesis was a study of John Milton’s use of music in his poetry, especially in “Paradise Lost.” His theory was that the universe worked together in what he called the harmony of the spheres, and that man’s sinful nature makes the world out of tune and dissonant. I wonder what he would have thought about Stravinsky’s music. It is apparent that from the drums and trumpets of warfare to the angelic choirs, music is part of God’s creation, and I would be bereft without being able to hear and participate in music in my life.
My two children’s books are: “I Hear Music Everywhere,” and “Yay! Hooray! It’s Concert Day!” I haven’t chosen a title for this next one. It is now just a research project, but you, dear readers, will be sharing in this experience with me, and I am open to your suggestions, input, and hopefully I will find a talented artist to do the illustrations. Keep in touch.
