My Psalm 160
Heavenly, eternal Father,
I confess that today I’ve already sinned against you
In thought, but mostly in just ignoring the first commandment,
To love you with all my heart, mind, soul, and strength,
And to love others as myself.
Again I began the busy day under my own power,
Not yours. Oh yes, there was the adoration hymn I sang in the shower,
There was the quick thanks prayer as I got out of bed,
There was a moment of thanksgiving over breakfast,
But all that was far later than the time I spent writing two chapters
Of my book from before dawn until seven-thirty.
So now, I finally concentrate on my God time,
Almost as a ritual, as a “I’ve got to do this now” thing,
Rather than looking forward to this as important as I would
To a scheduled meeting for lunch,
Or together-time later today with my grandbabies.
Why is that? My sin nature is so very with me.
Forgive me for again not giving You the first fruits of this day,
And help me redeem what’s left after I’ve given You only the leftovers.
May this confession remind me You love me,
Even when I sin yet again by forgetting my undying thanksgiving
For your grace. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
