For those of us who are conflicted and disgusted with the political campaign, I offer this, “My Psalm” number 180:
MY PSALM 180:
Heavenly Father, Who has forgiven our sins
And iniquities, and taken us again and again
Into Your loving arms as prodigals,
We thank you and praise Your Holy Name.
For You have forgiven us seventy times seventy
And seek to bring us to Yourself again and again.
For we, like those before us who sinned against You,
Deserve Your retribution and judgment
For following Our own ways and ignoring Yours.
You have set before us a covenant choice:
We follow Your ways and You will be our God.
We have repeatedly broken covenant with You
And deserve Your wrath, not Your mercy.
Yet we return yet again, prodigals that we are,
Relying on Your promises of redemption through Jesus.
I pray for forgiveness for following leaders
Who represent depravity and falsehood and
Thwart Your design for truth
Disobeying Your commandments with seeming impunity.
Teach us again to uphold all that is good and righteous,
And honorable, and true.
Through Jesus You have shown us how to live this life,
With forgiveness, humility, love, and honor for all.
Yet we follow our lesser goals and ignore purity.
Forgive us yet again.
I pray for mercy, for revival, for repentance,
And if need be, for judgment, so that we again
Follow Your commandments and covenants.
For sometimes it is in times of distress
You bring people to Yourself
When they have nowhere else to turn.
Bring us to our knees. Cause revival to come
To our nation. For we know “without a vision,
The people perish.” Be it far from us to do so.
I thank You for those who follow Your path,
For those whose testimonies are faithful to Your Word,
And serve as examples to me of how to live this life.
I thank you for heroes of the faith,
Even those who were not great until You made them so.
Even those like us who are unlikely candidates
For Your use in a mighty way.
If it is Your will, use even me
To advance Your kingdom here on earth.
I pray for those who suffer persecution this day
Who face death, destruction, and evil intent
Because they profess Your Name before evil men.
Uphold them, martyrs for Your cause,
And give them strength to witness to You
No matter what occurs.
Likewise, give us that measure of endurance
As well, that we may witness to Your love to the saints.
Let us leave behind us a worthy witness,
A testimony, a legacy to Your greatness
And faithfulness to our generation,
A pattern for our children and our grandchildren
To follow, to be encouraged and blessed by our walk.
Encourage us this day in whatever our circumstances
To see Your beauty in creation, Your signs and wonders
And know with utter assurance that this is Your world
And You reign in us who love You
And who seek to serve You this day.
In Jesus’ Redeeming Name we pray. Amen
