My Psalm 205
With Isaac Watts “I Sing the Mighty Power of God!”
“I sing the mighty power of God
That made the mountains rise,
That spread the flowing seas abroad,
And built the lofty skies.
There’s not a plant or flower below
But makes Thy glories known;
And clouds arise, and tempest blow
By order from Thy throne.”
My mind’s memory matches these mighty words
With loud organ swells
Not guitars and drums and keyboards.
Just as I am remembering childhood and college days
I recall the power of a mighty pipe organ
When grand old hymns come to mind.
When I think of God’s power, my mind again sings
“A Mighty Fortress Is our God,
A Bulwark never failing.”
Or
“The Lord Almighty Reigns”
“The Lord Almighty reigns In majesty most bright,
Appareled in omnipotence
And girded round with might.
“The world established stands
On its foundations broad;
His throne is fixed He reigns supreme
The everlasting God.
The floods have lifted up
Their voice in majesty
But mighty is the Lord our God
Above the raging sea.”
Thank you, Lord, for the gift of music
Which allows my heart to swell, to understand Your power
To soar with melody to praise Your Name.
For You are all powerful, Almighty,
And we bow before Your magnificent Presence
As Lord, Creator, Sustainer, and Guiding Presence,
The essence of power.
Prayer Our Heavenly Father, we are amazed by your power and might. From the shortest span of time to centuries, You are Alpha and Omega. From utter darkness to brilliant light, You provide. From heat and cold, You protect us. You still the waves and calm the storms, both literally and figuratively. You knit together our bones and sinews in our mothers’ bodies, every cell, every synapse, and You know us from the beginning of time, placing us where and when we are to enter and leave Your world. It is too wonderful for us. Our mere words of awe, amazement, wonder, and “how can He do that?” are so very inadequate.
Thank You for sharing Your power with us in Your gentleness and mercy, and for all You do to empower us to understand Your will for our very lives, our existence, our purpose, and our eternity. In Jesus’ Name, Who makes all things possible, Amen.
From my newest book, Life-Changing Water Devotional Guide. May it bless your day and remind us all Who is in charge of the entire universe, and our every second’s breath.
