I suppose the saying, “You can’t teach old dogs new tricks” might apply. Yesterday Ev and I attended the first of, I hope many, ice cream socials at our new senior facility. The staff here tries to involved people in activities, meals, trips, and events to bring us together in a sense of community. It’s admirable. Many of the people here are singels without nearby family members, and it is important that they fellowship with others.
We are part of the independent living apartment dwellers. We still drive, shop, have interaction with others, attend church, volunteer in the community, and have nearby family. But, it’s fun to learn new things.
In addition to enjoying the ice cream on a warm August day in their community room, we met several people. There was a domino game in progress, corn hole game that brought roars and groans, and at another table, mah jongg. I remember friends in Cedar Rapids playing this game, but I never took time to learn it. I’m now going to learn this intense game. I did not know, for instance that it is more than the matching game on my phone. My granddaughters enjoy the “memory” game. But the real game involves strategy and planning. I think I’ll enjoy it.
While I still have boxes to unpack and paintings to hang, I will take time to learn from the lady named Terri, how to play this fascinating game. For now, Ev doesn’t want to learn it. Regrettable, but this “old dog” will, by gum.
Wishing all a great day of new adventures too.
