Tomorrow is May 1st, a time for giving flowers to your neighbors. I remember as a child, and as a good neighbor, making little bouquets and hanging them on people’s front doorknobs. Now, with security cameras and neighbors we don’t even know, it might be a little risky, but I love the idea. It was a way to welcome spring, to encourage others to think kind thoughts, and a way to put a spring in someone’s step.
This morning I read my Susan Larson’s Blessings for Every Day desk calendar, as I try to do every day. She uses the passage from John 16 about staying connected with God as part of His vine, bearing good fruit and therefore asking and receiving God’s blessing because we are bringing glory to the Father. Then she write, and I share with you, for whatever you’re going through, or whatever mountains you need to climb today, this wonderful way to start the day: The title is “Wait Expectantly” and she writes: “May God take all of your failures, hardships, and heartbreaks and carry them for you. May you suddenly feel light in step and spirit. May you trust that bright days are ahead, and may you book up expectantly as you wait for God to keep His word to you.”
If that doesn’t bless you, your life may be smooth sailing for you right now. Mine is not. We are dealing with a family issue and there seems to be no viable solution to a sister’s issues right now. First, pray with me, that she will believe John 16:5-8 rather than reject Christ’s power in her life, second, that her many health problems will quiet down and give her better health and mobility, and third, that she will count the blessings she already has seen and give glory to God. Meanwhile, may my sister Ellen, who is her Power of Attorney and has done the heavy lifting for weeks without relief, find some relief from the ongoing struggles and walk with a lighter step, and may my disappointments in dreaming better things for our sister in my location, find resolution and sure confidence that the decisions we have made are the right ones. They’ve been bathed in prayer and we continue to hope soon our steps, collectively, will have “spring” in them and lift our spirits. Meanwhile, happy May Day tomorrow and may you bless those around you with beauty.
