There’s a special poem, written by Ruth Bell Graham before her marriage to Christian evangelist, Billy Graham, that speaks to the longing of a woman’s heart to be led to the right marriage partner, should that be God’s plan for her life. I included it in It’s a God Thing! (with permission) and share it with you as a special blessing. I first read it in 1960, I believe it was, in Reader’s Digest. It has been later published in several places and the language has been updated a bit, but I couldn’t write the story of love, romance, courtship, and the perfect Christian wedding ceremony and establishment of a covenant home in my book without including it.
It is so very easy today for young people to think that dating should be thought of as Hollywood presents it. Nothing could be further from the truth, or further from God’s perfect plan for us. I am convinced, as you will discover in my book, that nothing in the Christian’s life happens by accident, but luck, or by anything other than Godincidence. He knows where we are, who we are, what our personality type is, how He wants to use our lives to His purpose, and will establish our lifestyle according to His sovereignty. In the book, I show a couple brought together by just such a plan, and in retrospect, I honor Him in showing you by my personal example, just how right our marriage is because in His precise time, He brought Ev and I together to establish our home too.
And what is His perfect plan? Look at I Thessalonians 5: 23-24 : “May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it.”
“Dear Lord, I prayed all unafraid/(As we’re inclined to do)/ I do not need a handsome man/but let him be like You–/ I do not need one big and strong/nor one so very tall,/ nor need he be some genius,/or wealthy, Lord, at all;/ but let his head be high, dear God,/and let his eye be clear,/ his shoulders straight, whate’er his state, /whate’er his earthly sphere;/and let his face have character,/a ruggedness of soul,/ and let his whole life show, dear God,/ a singleness of goal;/ then when he comes/ (as he will come)/ with quiet eyes aglow,/ I’ll understnad that he’s the man/ I prayed for long ago.”
If you’re still seeking that special Valentine, this week especially, pray for the Lord’s guidance, be open to His leading, and I am convinced He will provide the Godincidences in your life that are in your best interests, because they’re part of His eternal and sovereign plan for your life because He loves you.
