In 2016 I wrote a book after researching water imagery in the Bible. There are well over 700 references to God using water to show His abundant providence, His retribution, and times of drought when men returned to God for succor and help.
Hymnwriters also use this imagery. as well. In this time of upheaval in politics and cultural life, yet this time of promise for our graduates, Edward Hopper’s 1871 hymn, “Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me” has a message so very current.
Apply this to your life today:
“Jesus, Saviour, pilot me Over life’s tempestuous sea;
Unknown waves before me roll Hiding rock and treacherous shoal;
Chart and compass come from Thee; Jesus, Saviour, pilot me.
As a mother stills her chld Thouu canst hush the ocean wild;
Boisterous waves obey Thy will When Thou sayest to them, ‘Be Still!’
Wondrous Sovereign of the sea, Jesus, Saviour pilot me.
When at last I near the shore And the fearful breakers roar;
‘Twixt me and the peaceful rest, Then while leaning on Thy breast,
May I hear Thee say to me, ‘Fear not, I will pilot thee.'” (public domain)
Whatever the stock market does (today down for the ninth day in a row), or war and elections are undecided, and gas prices and everything else rise, and our President is silent on the immigration crisis which will explode in three days, we who know Christ know who wins the eternal battle. Our God provides us what we need, our daily bread (maybe not meat) and shows us how to battle evil with good, so we can sustain our hope where many others see only peril. And as our graduates go out into the world of independence, we pray they will find the Star upon whom to chart their course, and may their parents have confidence they have raised them well.
